Cloud Foundry Day Europe 2024

Bosh is the solid technology that deploys Cloud Foundry on virtual machines for over a decade, and it can also deploy any cloud software, provided that a Bosh release exists for that software. In a previous talk we’ve demystified the process of authoring a Bosh release. Here our story started when we wanted to build a modern, open source, Bosh release for running Kubernetes, based on ContainerD. And running ContainerD is not an easy one, because Bosh has to work hand-in-hand with SystemD. This lighting talk is about the story of the project, the challenges we’ve faced, the solutions we’ve come up with, and we’ll share our experience actually writing a Bosh release for running nice, clustered, cloud software.

The Application Runtime Platform includes core Cloud Foundry components like Diego, Garden, Networking, Routing, Metrics, and Logging. Learn about the advances in these areas over the past year and what is on the horizon: v2 cgroups, platform encryption of tcp traffic, ASG consolidation, route specific properties, and more.

The User Account and Authentication (UAA) Server controls the authentication and access in classic Cloudfoundry landscapes. In can also connect external security domains and the internal CF landscape. This connection supports open standards that have been further developed in recent years. Therefore, the UAA needs to adopt these standards and furthermore implement mechanisms to be prepared for some worst-case scenarios. This presentation lists some of these tasks that we have already accomplished and gives an outlook on what is to come in the next year. This session presents new and exciting features brought to Cloud Foundry by the App Runtime Interfaces working group. The working group covers Cloud Controller, CF CLI and clients, Buildpacks, Autoscaler and MultiApps. You will hear about Cloud Native Buildpacks, CAPI performance improvements and Puma, steps on the migration path towards CF API v3 and more. Finally, I will give an outlook about the next planned features.

At the CF Day 2024 NA in May we discussed adding IPv6 or Dual Stack support for Cloud Foundry. There are clear technical and business benefits to supporting IPv6, but almost every component may need some form of adaptation or at least awareness of IPv6. This talk is intended as a status and progress update on the many different tasks and discussions that are happening in the community. The content will be fresh off the presses, showing the latest available information as it is in October 2024.
