The Cloud Foundry Renaissance - Julian Fischer, anynines GmbH
Wednesday October 9, 2024 09:35 - 10:00 CEST
In this talk you'll explore how the Cloud Foundry business case is still alive and that there might be an increase of momentum in the Cloud Foundry ecosystem. Kubernetes is versatile and its community is growing fast. However, the hypothesis that Kubernetes will fully cannibalize Cloud Foundry territory did not come true. Large scale Cloud Foundry environments running lots of cloud native applications provide a much better economy of scale compared to Kubernetes environments. With a closer look at the issues arising from using Kubernetes in large scale environments, you will learn how the operational efficiency of large Cloud Foundry environments remains superior for a range of workloads.

BOSH Working Hand-in-Hand with SystemD, a Story About Authoring a BOSH Release - Benjamin Gandon, Gstack
Wednesday October 9, 2024 11:25 - 11:35 CEST
Bosh is the solid technology that deploys Cloud Foundry on virtual machines for over a decade, and it can also deploy any cloud software, provided that a Bosh release exists for that software. In a previous talk we’ve demystified the process of authoring a Bosh release. Here our story started when we wanted to build a modern, open source, Bosh release for running Kubernetes, based on ContainerD. And running ContainerD is not an easy one, because Bosh has to work hand-in-hand with SystemD. This lighting talk is about the story of the project, the challenges we’ve faced, the solutions we’ve come up with, and we’ll share our experience actually writing a Bosh release for running nice, clustered, cloud software.

Evolution of UAA Towards OAuth 2.1 and OpenID Foundation - Markus Strehle, SAP SE
Wednesday October 9, 2024 11:55 - 12:05 CEST
The User Account and Authentication (UAA) Server controls the authentication and access in classic Cloudfoundry landscapes. In can also connect external security domains and the internal CF landscape. This connection supports open standards that have been further developed in recent years. Therefore, the UAA needs to adopt these standards and furthermore implement mechanisms to be prepared for some worst-case scenarios. This presentation lists some of these tasks that we have already accomplished and gives an outlook on what is to come in the next year. Renewals from last year: - FIPS support in UAA - Higher JWT signing algorithms, e.g. RS512 - Technical authentication without secrets Planned. - Spring Boot 3 support - Opensaml-4 support - X509 for technical authentication

What Does Korifi Cost? - Ram Iyengar, Cloud Foundry Foundation
Wednesday October 9, 2024 12:10 - 12:15 CEST
Estimating and understanding cloud costs is difficult exercise. It gets even more complex when attempting to do this with Kubernetes at scale. What really obfuscates it the most is when you install an abstraction that is meant to manage build, deployment, scaling, and all other functions. OpenCost lifts the veil on Kubernetes spending. This open-source project delivers real-time cost allocation, giving you a detailed breakdown from entire deployments down to individual containers. It integrates seamlessly with major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP) and even supports on-premises clusters, ensuring dynamic asset pricing for all Kubernetes environments. When applied to Korifi, it tells us many things. In this talk, I intend to explore what it costs to operate the tool on Kubernetes clusters. Can we find out what a build costs? Can we ascertain the cost of scaling an instance? Come to the talk to find out!

Service Brokers That Work for You! - Kevin Rutten, Fivetwenty Inc
Wednesday October 9, 2024 14:20 - 14:45 CEST
The Create Service workflow has empowered Cloud Foundry Developers for years, but we have seen many places wrestle with Enterprise grade data services vs the simplicity of the Create Service workflow. We want you to see how we are bridging the gap. We will show you the next generation of service broker, that combine the CF BrokerAPI service with Blacksmith (a service to create services with BOSH), a simple interface to create services with scripting (scripts to create RDS, CloudDB, MongoDB Enterprise, etc) and handle the secrets generated, with a UI that the Data Team can use to manage all the services the way they want to, included “pre-allocated services”. We will talk about “Temperature Gauge”, our tool to add monitoring to services via Prometheus Node Exporter, or other tools that can provide basic metrics to the dashboard for monitoring and alerting. We can forward alerts to the Developer, the Operators, and Data Team, so no team is left blind anymore. Show how we can help automate the backups for services in PCF/OCF Finally, we will discuss upgrading services, and multi-home services (add the same Blacksmith to two CF's in different regions and share a service)

Gaining Flexibility with per-Route Features - Tamara Boehm & Maximilian Moehl, SAP SE
Wednesday October 9, 2024 14:50 - 14:55 CEST
Currently, the Cloud Foundry routing stack does not support the configuration of features for a specific route. A case in point is the load balancing algorithm between Gorouters and backends. This algorithm is defined globally and is utilized generically to distribute requests among available backends for a given route. The ability to define the load balancing algorithm on a per-route basis could help in optimizing the use of application instances, based on the workloads on the application side. In this talk Tamara and Max, on behalf of the SAP BTP CF Routing team, present several scenarios for which a more flexible approach of per-route functionalities can provide benefits. They are going to highlight a proposed solution that keeps the implementation overhead as simple as possible. Furthermore, they will talk about the current implementation state and challenges we have encountered. This talk is intended to raise some further discussions and ideas that could be integrated as a per-route feature.
